Cannabis Rules in Thailand: What Tourists Need To Know
The practical rules for visitors — who can buy, what a compliant shop must show you, where consumption is not allowed, and why you must never carry it across a border.
Thailand''s cannabis framework has changed several times, and the headlines are usually more dramatic than the day-to-day reality for a visitor. Here is the practical version.
The short answer
Licensed dispensaries operate legally and must display their licence. You must be 20 or over. Consumption in public spaces is not allowed. Never take cannabis out of Thailand — that is trafficking, in both directions, with serious penalties.
Who can buy
Adults aged 20 and over, with ID. Sales are not permitted to under-20s or to pregnant or breastfeeding customers. Bring your passport or a photo of it.
What a compliant shop looks like
- A visible licence on the wall
- Staff who can explain what they sell and where it came from
- A certificate of analysis available for each batch
- Clear rules about no consumption on the street outside
- No sales to minors, no pressure selling, no unlabelled loose product
If a shop fails those basics, it is not only a legal question — it usually correlates with the quality of what is in the jar.
Do I need a prescription?
Regulation continues to move toward a medical framework, and requirements can differ by shop and by product. The reliable approach is to message the dispensary before you visit and ask what they need from you that week. We keep our own guidance current and will tell you exactly what applies when you contact us.
Where you can and cannot consume
Public consumption is not permitted — that includes streets, parks, public transport and most beaches. Plan around licensed lounges and private accommodation, and check with your hotel first, since many have their own smoking rules independent of the law.
Crossing borders: don''t
You cannot fly out of Thailand with cannabis, in your bag or on your person, no matter how small the amount or how legal the purchase was here. Export requires licences that individuals do not hold, and the destination country''s law applies on arrival. Finish it or leave it.
Common visitor questions
- Can foreigners buy? Yes, from a licensed dispensary, 20+ with ID.
- Can I take it back to my hotel? Generally yes, but consume it privately and check your hotel''s own policy.
- Can I drive after? No. Driving under the influence is an offence, same as alcohol.
- Can I mail it home? No.
Buying with confidence
The simplest way to stay on the right side of everything is to buy from a licensed operation that grows its own product and can show you the paperwork. Everything on our shelf is grown at our indoor farm in Ratchathewi and lab-tested batch by batch, and our staff will walk you through the rules before you buy.
